Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

Jammu & Kashmir: Centre should act

With the process of the Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections beginning, it is clear that there is a widespread desire of the people in the state for a return to peace and for a political settlement to the problems. The attitude of the Hurriyat leadership also indicates a change. Some Kashmiri leaders have expressed their willingness to participate in elections as part of an overall move for a political settlement. At such a juncture, it is unfortunate that the Prime Minister and the Home Minister refused to meet Shabir Shah when he visited Delhi. It is incumbent upon the Central government to immediately announce steps for a political dialogue with all concerned. This will be a positive step forward.
