Suppression of a Daily Newspaper

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly condemns the action of the BJP state government of Tripura in cancelling the registration of Daily Desharkatha, a progressive newspaper.

Desharkatha is a prominent newspaper of Tripura of forty years standing and is the second largest circulated daily in the state.

The district magistrate of West Tripura has cancelled the registration of the newspaper on flimsy and dubious grounds and consequently the Registrar of Newspapers has also withdrawn the certificate of registration.

This is a brazen attack on the freedom of the press. It is a sad day that Desharkatha has stopped publication on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti.

The CPI(M) appeals to all democratic sections of the people to protest against this serious attack on the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.
