VHP Volte Face on Ayodhya Assurance

Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) expresses its grave concern at the volte-face of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad disassociating itself from the earlier assurance it had given in March 2002 that it would abide by the court verdict on the Ayodhya issue.

This was only to be expected. The RSS-led Saffron combine by flagrantly threatening to violate the Indian Constitution and the law of the land is seeking to whip up communal passions once again. The plan to start a campaign from July end to culminate in early 2003 will further vitiate the atmosphere and spread the communal poison deeper in the country. The VHP's threats of "another partition" of the country and hailing the State-sponsored Gujarat genocide as a "positive response of the Hindus" clearly reveals their gameplan.

While the BJP will use this communal polarisation for its political benefit at a time when its mass support is fast dwindling, its allies in the NDA are answerable to the people. Displaying crassest opportunism, the so-called secular allies of the BJP have become willing accomplices to further the RSS political agenda.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) warns the Vajpayee government of the serious consequences of such an agenda threatening the unity and integrity of India.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) calls upon the people of India to rise unitedly and rebuff the anti-national machinations of the RSS-led Saffron combine.
