Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:
US Ambassador’s Gross Interference In Internal Affairs

The Ambassador of the USA has written to the Assam Chief Minister offering FBI assistance for investigating the recent attacks in Assam. This action constitutes a gross violation of norms and a direct interference in the internal affairs of the country.

Firstly, there is no mystery about who is responsible for the recent bomb blasts and attacks in Assam. Both the NDFB and ULFA are involved. It does not require the FBI to find out who is responsible for the series of attacks in Assam. Such problems in the North East have a political dimension and the US Ambassador’s suggestion is an interference in the internal affairs of the country. Secondly, the US Ambassador has no business to write to a state Chief Minister directly making such an offer which involves the internal security of the country.

The Assam Chief Minister’s response to the US Ambassador’s letter appreciating the offer and indicating his willingness to accept it is also condemnable. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi does not seem to be aware of the elementary concept of national sovereignty and it would be better if he concentrates on tackling the extremist problem which he has singularly failed to effectively tackle so far.
The Central government must outrightly reject the American offer. It has to urgently and seriously address the resurgence of violence perpetrated by the extremist outfits with the cooperation of the state governments in the North Eastern region.
