On Transfer of Home Secretary

Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The summary replacement of the Union home secretary and the attendant reshuffle of the higher echelons of the civil services of the Union government have been undertaken by the Vajpayee government with the elections in view. Changing an officer in a sensitive post such as the home secretary is obviously motivated by narrow political considerations.

As a government which has resigned and is continuing in office till the elections are held, this action is highly improper and violates the norms of functioning expected from a caretaker government.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) urges upon the President of India and the Election Commission to immediately intervene to see that these changes are not put into effect.
