Dr. Lakshmi Sahgal has issued the following statement:
I thank all those who have sponsored and supported my candidature in the presidential elections. It gave me the opportunity to address a wide section of the people regarding the vital issues facing the country, especially the danger posed by the communal forces in the wake of the Gujarat events.
During the presidential campaign I visited a number of states. Everywhere I went, a large number of people extended support for the issues that I raised — the defence of secular values and the necessity for all Indians to unitedly work together to address the real problems of poverty and deprivation faced by the millions of our people.
I assure all of them that I will continue to work for these goals.
I congratulate Dr. Abdul Kalam on his election to the post of President and convey my best wishes to him.
