Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly condemns the continued US-led NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. The US imperialist arrogance has reached such heights that even while negotiations for a settlement are on the unilateral bombing has not ceased. International law and the will of the people are being violated with impunity in this continuing bombing which has already claimed the lives of many innocent people.

The bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade highlighted the indiscriminate manner in which the bombing is being done irrespective of the civilian casualties that it is causing. US President, Bill Clinton, will be held responsible by history for unleashing what must be considered as the most gruesome unilateral attack against a sovereign country.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) calls for the immediate halting of this barbaric bombing. It calls upon the United Nations Security Council to exercise its authority and put in motion proposals for peace and normalcy that have been advanced by many countries especially Russia.

It is indeed deplorable that the US President while formally regretting the attack on the Chinese embassy has chosen to issue a veiled threat to countries not supporting its indefensible military action to fall in line or be prepared for the consequences. Such imperialist arrogance must be rebuffed. The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) calls upon all peace loving people to protest against this heinous attacks against Yugoslavia.

The CPI(M) calls upon the Government of India to atleast now not remain content with issuing formal statements but to take the initiative to rally the Non-Aligned countries against this despicable display of imperialist arrogance
