Holding the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government responsible for the rise in number of crimes against women in West Bengal and demanding punishment for the culprits, West Bengal Left Front organised a protest rally on February 6 at Kolkata. More than 30 thousand Left Front workers from 13 districts of South Bengal participated in the rally from Ramlila Park to College Square today.

Referring to the death of Howrah youth Arup Bhandari, who was injured while protesting against an eve-teasing incident, and mentioning other incidents in Kamduni, Park Street and Barasat, Left Front Chairman and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Biman Basu alleged the state administration had not taken any action against the culprits, “thus encouraging more and more in crimes against women”. “The state government has not taken any action in any of the incidents… They have either kept mum or have referred to them as trivial matters,” he said. “It’s quite surprising that in a state with a woman chief minister, women are not safe and she is not at all moved by such incidents,”  he said.

Leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Dr. Surjya Kanta Mishra demanded “immediate action against those who are involved in these incidents.”

Similar protest rallies were also organised in seven districts of North Bengal along with Siliguri and Jalpaiguri town on the same day.
