The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

President Trump’s announcement of the United States’ withdrawal from the nuclear agreement with Iran is an unwarranted and irresponsible step that needs to be strongly condemned. The threat of imposing sanctions on Iran is illegal and should be resolutely opposed by the United Nations.

The nuclear agreement signed in 2015 between Iran and six countries – the United States, Russia, China, France, UK and Germany – had worked well so far. As recently as February 2018, the International Atomic Energy Agency has stated that Iran is compliant with the terms of the agreement. By resiling from the agreement, Trump has signaled a new aggressive policy against Iran which is going to threaten peace and stability in West Asia.

The European allies of US, who have disapproved of Trump’s action, should work with Russia and China to maintain the agreement.

The Polit Bureau calls on the Modi government to disapprove of the US action. The government should make it clear that it will not support any sanctions against Iran and will maintain full economic and trade ties with Iran and not succumb to US pressures.
