Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

On UP by-election

The results of the by-election for a single seat in Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad has shown that the Mayawati government is in a minority. It could muster only 194 votes when the majority required is 202. This vindicates the stand of the opposition that the Governor should have called a session of the Legislative Assembly immediately where the government's majority can be tested.

In this connection, the stand taken by the Congress in abstaining in the by-election is deplorable. It has only served to help the BSP-BJP alliance. The Congress leadership should be aware that there can be no neutral position on the issue.
