Joined political and social activities from school days. Participated in election campaign during an assembly bye-election in 1954, while still in school. Though recommended for Party in 1957, was granted only in 1958 as the minimum age requirement was 18 years.

Joined in the movement against Bengal-Bihar merger in 1956 and food movement in 1959. Imprisoned in 1958.

Secretary, Bengal Provincial Students’ Federation, Kolkata district and Vice-President of BPSF in 1964.

Worked as Asst. Secretary, Indo-Vietnam Solidarity Committee in mid-sixties.
